There’s been a recent influx of blessings in Missy Elliott’s camp since last year. The iconic singer, rapper and songwriter has been counting well-deserved ‘awarded’ blessings. Just last year, Missy received an honorary doctorate from the Berklee College of Music and also became the first female rapper in history to be induced into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Missy will continue this streak of ‘blessings’ tonight at the 2019 VMAs when she will be awarded the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
The female emcee has now further unleashed her iconic status to the world with a new EP, Iconology and a new video to match, Throw It Back. She announced the new project on Instagram with a cover art of the EP writing;
“You, my fans and God are the reason I am here and have celebrated every milestone with me … Let’s continue the celebration at midnight tonight. I’m dropping a collection of new songs! Let’s #ThrowItBack to a time when music just felt good and made us want to dance!”
Missy has also released a video for her surprise new single “Throw It Back”. The visual also stars dancer and R&B star, Teyana Taylor. Iconology is Missy Elliott’s first project since The Cookbook dropped back in 2005. Throw It Back is her first solo single since she dropped “I’m Better” in 2017.
Born Mellissa Arnette Elliott, Missy launched her solo career in 1997 and since then has dropped successful singles and albums. She has won five Grammy Awards and sold 30 million records. According to a report by Billboard in 2017, Missy Elliott is the best selling rapper in music history.
