Taylor Swift has revealed plans to re-record her entire catalog to take back control of her masters.
Taylor Swift freaked out a few weeks back after discovering her Scooter Braun had acquired the master rights to her first six albums. She reportedly called it her “worst case scenario“. In a new report by THR, Taylor during an interview with Tracy Smith on CBS Sunday Morning was asked if she will re-record her music in response to the deal, and she said, “Oh yeah“. Smith further asked the singer if that is a plan to which she responds, “Absolutely“.
On June 30, Scooter Braun‘s Ithaca Holdings LLC announced that it had acquired Taylor‘s Former label, Big Machine Label Group in a deal that gives them the rights over Taylor‘s first 6 albums. When Taylor found out about the acquisition she wrote a long note detailing her worst fears and years of alleged bullying at the hands of Braun. Here’s an excerpt;
“This is what happens when you sign a deal at 15 to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept. And when that man says ‘Music has value,’ he means its value is beholden to men who had no part in creating it.
When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter. Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words ‘Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever.”
